Soloist Chungha‘s extraordinary family history has gained attention after netizens discovered that her maternal grandfather was reportedly an independence activist and democracy activist.

Despite having such a notable family background, Chungha has rarely highlighted it throughout her career, meaning many fans were reportedly unaware of her grandfather’s history.

According to information circulating about her family, Chungha’s maternal grandfather participated in the Korean independence movement, served during the Korean War, and later participated in the May 18 Democratization Movement.

Rather than frequently mentioning her grandfather’s achievements, Chungha reportedly became concerned that she herself did not know enough about his experiences and Korean history to speak about them accurately.

Worried that she could make a mistake by discussing such serious subjects with only superficial knowledge, she began studying Korean history herself. She eventually obtained Level 1, the highest level, of the Korean History Proficiency Test.

Having spent much of her childhood in the United States, she experienced difficult circumstances before eventually pursuing her dream of becoming a singer. After gaining recognition through I.O.I, she successfully established herself as one of the most prominent female soloists of her generation. Despite her success, one of her first priorities after beginning to earn money was reportedly her family. Chungha previously revealed that she used her earnings to pay off her family’s debts, highlighting the responsibility she felt toward them.

With her grandfather’s history now receiving renewed attention, fans have been particularly impressed that Chungha never appeared to use her prestigious family background to promote herself. Instead, she went as far as studying history seriously so that she could properly understand the legacy she came from before speaking about it publicly.
