A Korean transgender celebrity candidly shared the changes she experienced after undergoing gender reassignment surgery and her current health status.
On August 18th, a video featuring famous transgender star Harisu was released on YouTube.
In the video, Harisu revealed that she spent a long period as an unknown before becoming known to the public through a cosmetics commercial.
Hari Su recalled, “I debuted in the entertainment industry in 1991. I was cast in movies, dramas, and as an advertising model, but I couldn’t sign contracts because I was transgender.” She said, “I stayed unknown for 10 years before getting an opportunity.”
Regarding the cosmetics commercial that made her a star, she said, “As the country’s first newcomer to become a makeup beauty model, I received ₩60.0 million KRW (about $43,200 USD) in just six months. I understand that the cosmetics company president insisted it had to be Harisu.”
Harisu, who received explosive attention at the time, looked back, saying, “My early 20s were my prime. It was the heyday in the transgender community.”
She also frankly talked about changes in her appearance and care methods over time. Harisu revealed she visited a dermatologist for the first time in eight years recently, saying, “As I got older, bruises started appearing on my face, and my skin changed.” About Botox, she admitted, “The effect lasts only about 2 to 3 months and it doesn’t really work.”
Harisu said she is not someone who exercises regularly and added, “I had gender reassignment surgery early on. It’s been 30 years since I had the surgery in 1995.”
She explained that due to the burden of continually taking female hormones in the past, she is not currently undergoing hormone therapy. She also revealed she was diagnosed with early osteoporosis about six years ago.
She said, “My bones were in worse condition than my 80-year-old mother’s,” and expressed surprise upon learning about her bone health at the time.
She went on to say, “It’s hard to start female hormone therapy again now,” and shared her current concerns, saying, “Since I’m living outside the gender world now, I don’t have any information either.“
