Post Linking IU To Missing Persons Case In Jeju Goes Viral

As singer and actress IU continues legal action against malicious commenters, excessive and harmful rumors about her persist.

Recently, a post appeared on social media claiming, “Sued by IU for defamation.”

The author of the post listed the location of Kakao’s headquarters, the disappearance of Heo in Jeju in 2020, the purple tracksuit IU wore on JTBC‘s variety show Hyori’s Homestay, and her 2024 release “Shh..” while asserting that Heo was “someone who exposed IU on the internet.”

Jeju has been in the headlines recently for its missing persons cases.

Linking a Jeju missing persons case to IU, the post generated outrageous rumors that drew criticism. However, the post received thousands of likes and spread widely.

Recently, IU’s team has been working to stop malicious comments by identifying the identities of the commenters through U.S. courts. They allege that a malicious commenter, identified as A, posted 52 false articles that damaged IU’s reputation.

Unable to identify A’s real identity, IU’s team has requested evidence disclosure from Meta to secure materials useful for the ongoing defamation lawsuit in Korea.

It is known that A has created and spread various malicious rumors related to IU, including plagiarism accusations, false claims about China, false claims about international achievements, allegations of exploiting deceased individuals for marketing, accusations of media control and public opinion manipulation, and posts linking song lyrics to national tragedies.

IU is reported to be pursuing criminal and civil lawsuits against a total of 96 individuals.
