Paraplegic YouTuber Park We Gets Involved In Yet Another Controversy

While YouTuber Park We has remained silent since revealing footage of his fall accident on the KTX train, his past volunteer work in Kenya has come back into the spotlight.

In October of last year, Park We’s YouTube channel Weracle posted a video documenting the story of Park We and his wife Song Jieun traveling to Kenya with a support organization for volunteer work.

In the video, the couple visits to meet children living in a slum area. Park We navigates the rough and narrow roads in a wheelchair. During the process of using stairs, members of the volunteer group helped lift Park We’s wheelchair or supported him physically. Volunteers also assisted him with moving around difficult places with stairs and narrow passages.

Park We asked for help from those around him to enter a house. He said, “I think I can go down by lifting only my body without the wheelchair,” then added, “Come behind me, I’ll show you how,” explaining the method to lift him.

He instructed a man in front of him, “Brother! Look, you hold the knees like this,” and to someone behind him, he said, “Hold like this, that’s right!” Then, to the person lifting his legs and entering from behind, he warned, “Be careful with your feet and your head,” to ensure safety.

When the video was first released, most responses were supportive of the couple volunteering overseas. However, after the KTX fall accident footage became a controversy, uncomfortable opinions surfaced.

Some said, “They went there not to volunteer but to receive help,” “Did they really have to go all the way to Kenya? There are many people struggling here at home,” “They could have just donated money,” and “Volunteers must have worked twice as hard.”

Meanwhile, on the 21st of last month, Park We released CCTV footage of his fall accident while disembarking the KTX train, which sparked backlash. He was then subjected to various accusations, but hasn’t spoken about them to date.
