Korea’s Jeju Island has become the subject of global discussion due to the growing number of missing-person cases.

The case at the center of this discussion is that of a 37-year-old woman named Jang Mi Ran. On May 12, KST, Jang left her accommodation in Hallim, Jeju, and never returned. Her boyfriend reported her missing on May 13. On August 24, KST, Jang’s body was found near the accommodation, reportedly hanging from a tree.

The fact that her body was discovered so close to the accommodation, 104 days after her disappearance, immediately turned people’s attention to the police investigation. According to reports, the officer handling her case falsely closed it right after the initial missing-person report was filed. The police’s search for Jang only resumed last month after her family filed yet another report.

The case grew murkier when reports emerged that the same police officer who had falsely closed Jang’s case had also handled a separate missing-person case in the same way. The victim in this second case was a man in his 60s.

The man was reported missing on July 2 and was later found dead on August 22, exactly 51 days after going missing. The family also made a second report in this case, which prompted the police to launch a search.

Between August 22 and August 24, two more people were found dead who were previously reported missing. A man believed to be in his 70s was found dead in waters near Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, on August 23. A person fishing in the sea discovered his body. Another missing person, a man, was found dead near a valley in Aewol on August 24.

Though all these cases are separate and still under investigation, the simultaneous discoveries have raised major suspicions about a possible serial killer or organized crime. The police officer who falsified two of these missing-person cases is one of the most disturbing aspects of this situation, given that he had reportedly handled 298 missing-person cases since his appointment. All of these cases are reportedly being reviewed for any similar foul play.

These cases have also prompted netizens to open up about their own scary experiences of visiting Jeju Island, raising further questions about the safety situation.

Meanwhile, the theories and speculations remain unfounded as the police investigation is still ongoing, looking into all four deaths that came to the surface in the last few days.
