On the July 18 episode of MBN’s Kim Joo Ha’s Day & Night, actress Goo Hye Sun (Koo Hye Sun) was asked whether she was currently dating anyone. The actress immediately answered that she was not, explaining that although she has dated at different points in her life, she finds the emotional demands of a relationship difficult.

Host Kim Joo Ha then shared that while she personally opposes marriage, she believes people should still date frequently because once someone stops dating, it can become increasingly easy to remain alone. Goo Hye Sun agreed that relationships could still be worthwhile, but added one firm condition: Each person should eventually return to their own home.
The actress explained that she feels most natural when she is completely alone. When another person is present, however, she becomes conscious of the parts of herself she would normally never need to hide. She noted that when living alone, it does not matter whether she has washed her hair or suddenly yells because she is angry. Sharing a home, on the other hand, forces a person to confront every side of themselves through their partner’s eyes.
Goo Hye Sun compared the experience to permanently placing another mirror inside the house, one that continually reflects back the parts of herself she dislikes. She also suggested that cohabitation can leave little room for temporarily withdrawing, cooling down, or simply existing without being observed. Kim Joo Ha cautiously suggested that there might still be someone capable of loving even her imperfect sides. Goo Hye Sun, however, remained unconvinced.

Although Goo Hye Sun did not directly link her comments to her former marriage, her candid explanation of why she finds relationships and cohabitation difficult drew renewed attention to her highly publicized divorce. Goo Hye Sun married actor Ahn Jae Hyun in 2016, and the former couple finalized their divorce in 2020 following a contentious and highly public breakup.
